Garuda Vishnu Kencana – Park GWK in Kuta

Garuda Vishnu Kencana (GWK) Park is one of the most iconic and spectacular landmarks in Bali. Located in the southern part of the island, it serves as a cultural centre where various artistic events occur, including traditional Balinese dances, musical performances, and theatrical shows. The park’s main highlight is the towering Garuda Vishnu Kencana statue, featured alongside a theatre, expansive gardens, and recreational areas. There are also plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes within the park.

We visited the park on our second day in Bali. Our first accommodation was very close by, so it took us less than 10 minutes to get there. Despite the short distance, the hustle and bustle of the area delayed our arrival. Even once we arrived, we had to search for a parking spot for some time. I would recommend planning to arrive earlier to avoid such traffic delays.

From the car park, a small trackless train shuttles guests directly to the entrance. Tickets cost around 6 GBP per person for the basic package, and at the time of my visit, there were no discounts for children.

The massive Garuda Vishnu Kencana statue has certainly earned its place as the centrepiece of the park, depicting the god Vishnu riding the mythical bird Garuda. Standing at 121 metres tall, it is one of the tallest statues in the world. Construction began in 1997 and took more than 20 years to complete. The statue was finally unveiled in 2018 in a major event that attracted both locals and tourists from around the globe.

The statue symbolises Vishnu, one of the three principal Hindu gods, protecting the world from evil, representing power, protection, and guardianship. Garuda, Vishnu’s mount, is a mythical bird and also the national symbol of Indonesia.

The park offers more entertainment through its large amphitheatre that can hold up to 8,000 people, where numerous artistic performances, concerts, and traditional Balinese dance shows are held. These performances take place every hour and are included in the ticket price. We particularly enjoyed the music, participation with the audience, and the vibrant costumes. A visit to the amphitheatre is a good choice if you want to immerse yourself in Balinese culture.

Beyond the amphitheatre and the impressive Garuda Vishnu statue, the park offers plenty of other attractions, including beautiful gardens, smaller statues, art exhibitions and traditional shops selling Balinese souvenirs. In the evening, the park hosts light shows and fire performances. It’s a good idea to check the schedule of performances on the day you visit so you can plan your time in the park accordingly.
